This museum is the former home of Karen Blixen (pen name Issac Dinineson) and her Swedish husband, Count Bror von Blixen Fincke. Blixen was famous for her novel ‘Out of Africa’, first published in 1937 which chronicled her life on their coffee estate and that period of Kenyan colonial history. Karen, the district lying south-west of Nairobi city was named after Blixen when she left Kenya, following a 17 year period residing in the country.
The house gained international fame with the release of the movie of the same name, and many scenes from the Oscar winning film were shot at the museum.
The house was opened to the public in 1986 as one of Kenya’s national museums.
The Karen Blixen Museum is located in the peaceful suburb of Karen, Nairobi, at the foot of the stunning Ngong Hills. This historical site was once the home of Danish author Karen Blixen, who is best known for her memoir Out of Africa, which chronicles her life on a coffee farm in Kenya.
