A Milestone Moment for Ololo: Farm Manager, Kevin Getobai Awarded United Nations SDG Pioneer

At Ololo, we’ve always believed in the power of hard work, innovation, and sustainability—and now, our efforts have been recognized on the global stage. We are thrilled to share that Kevin Getobai, the manager of Ololo Farm, has been honored as one of just 12 global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Pioneers by the United Nations.

This prestigious award highlights Kevin’s dedication to sustainability and our shared commitment to creating solutions that positively impact not only our farm but the broader community. The recognition comes largely thanks to our groundbreaking Black Soldier Fly project, a venture that has the potential to transform Africa’s food systems by providing a sustainable, environmentally friendly source of protein for animal feed. This project, developed under Kevin's leadership, addresses critical issues such as food security and waste management—challenges that are especially important in Kenya and across the African continent.

The Black Soldier Fly Project: A Sustainable Solution for Kenya’s Food Security

The Black Soldier Fly project has become a cornerstone of Ololo’s sustainability efforts. By cultivating these insects, we are able to produce a high-protein feed for livestock and fish, reducing the need for traditional, resource-intensive feeds like soy and fishmeal. Not only does this project help decrease the pressure on these overused resources, but it also transforms organic waste into valuable protein, helping to solve food waste challenges at the same time.

In a country like Kenya, where food security is a pressing concern, this innovative approach has enormous potential. The ability to generate low-cost, nutrient-rich animal feed locally could significantly improve food production systems, making them more resilient to external shocks like droughts and fluctuating global prices. Additionally, by reducing reliance on imported feeds, the project could contribute to more stable and self-sufficient agricultural practices in Kenya.

Kevin’s leadership in the Black Soldier Fly project showcases how small, localized initiatives can have a transformative impact, not only at Ololo but across entire communities. His work has attracted attention far beyond our farm, and the recognition from the United Nations further validates the global potential of this sustainable approach.

A Global Stage for Local Innovation

Kevin’s award has opened new doors for Ololo. He was invited to attend the United Nations Climate Week in New York, where he connected with global leaders, innovators, and other SDG pioneers who share our vision of building a sustainable future. The potential for collaboration and knowledge sharing is immense, and we are excited about the positive change these connections could bring.

This is not just a proud moment for Kevin and Ololo, but for Kenya as well. We are deeply committed to continuing our work toward a more sustainable, resilient future for our local communities and beyond.

We can’t wait to see how our projects, especially the Black Soldier Fly initiative, will continue to develop and change lives across Africa.

Stay tuned for more updates on our journey toward sustainable innovation!
